Academic Overview

By the time they graduate, Beaufort Academy students possess the skills, discipline, and knowledge that will prove to be essential to success throughout college and beyond. The school prides itself on its effectiveness in developing the whole individual. The cornerstone of a successful education is the academic curriculum. The college preparatory curriculum has been designed to enhance each student's education by tailoring it to fit his or her academic needs within the traditional classroom structure. In so doing, Beaufort Academy has built a strong academic reputation that reflects its commitment to quality and its concern for the needs of each student.

Homework is introduced in grades 1 and 2, and it is considered an integral part of the academic program in grades 3 and above. Full participation in academic classes requires daily preparation of materials to be completed outside of class. Students who routinely fail to do homework cannot expect to pass their course work.

In lower school, about one-half hour of daily homework is expected Monday through Thursday. In middle school, 60 to 90 minutes of daily homework is anticipated. Each student has study hall for the last 50 minutes of the day, and the amount of work is carefully coordinated by the team of teachers. In upper school, study halls are provided, and required daily homework will vary widely based upon individual students' schedules. Due to the many variables, teachers in the upper school do not attempt to coordinate homework assignments, but students are encouraged to communicate the details of their work load to their teachers.

Parents must assume the responsibility of providing an appropriate time and place for student homework. While parents should not do the homework for students, they should take an active interest and accept responsibility for ensuring that homework is completed.
