COLLEGE ADVISING:

The goal of college advising is to insure that all graduating seniors have appropriate opportunities to attend a four year college or university. Toward that end college advising begins in the 9th grade.

Working with the Director of Studies and Upper School Principal, the college advisor encourages every student to take challenging courses. Furthermore the college advisor promotes and encourages meaningful and committed community service, participation in athletics, publications and other positive school and community activities. The college advisor assists with planning college visits, and oversees the presentation of resumes and the college essay. He encourages SAT and ACT preparation.

The college advising office maintains up to date reference materials, a DVD and VCR, as well as student computer with pertinent software.

Beaufort Academy encourages college admissions representatives to visit our campus throughout the year.

The college advisor aggressively fosters student opportunities for scholarships, financial aid, merit awards and grants. In past years Beaufort Academy can boast of Heritage Scholars, Rotary Scholars, Kiwanis Scholars, Palmetto Follows and South Carolina LIFE awards. Annual scholarship awards often exceed $1,000,000.

The Director of College Advising is an active member of NACAC and regularly attends regional and national conferences, most recently the national conference in Tampa. Within the past five years the director has visited over 140 colleges and universities throughout the U.S. Each summer the director visits 10/12 colleges.

An important part of the college advising program is the annual junior class college trip. This  3 or 4 day excursion takes place in early March and is required of all juniors. Generally we visit 6 or 7 colleges.

The college advising office is a resource for productive summer programs and activities. This is available to all students. In the past Beaufort Academy students attended programs at Harvard University, Stamford University, USNA, Oxford in England, St. Andrews University in Scotland, The University of Virginia as well as Clemson and USC. Students are encouraged to consider Outward Bound or NOLS as a summer experience.
