Students in fifth and sixth grade can join the literature club held once a week in the library during lunch. Students meet in the conference room to eat lunch and share books. The group discusses the annual books chosen for the South Carolina Children's Book Award Nominees. Typically there are twenty books to read and share. Students read a title together and additional books independently. Students who read three or more from the list are able to vote for their favorites in a statewide election. Students are also encouraged to compete in the South Carolina Book Award Banner Contest held annually during the South Carolina Association for School Librarian's Conference. Students are provided material for banners which are submitted to the competition in February. The banner must be based on one of the twenty South Carolina Book Award Nominees.
