5K/10K Run/Walk and Chili Cook Off
Come out and run or walk a USATF certified 5k or 10k course at beautiful Coosaw Point and stay after for a great party to bask in the glow of your race performance! A portion of the proceeds will benefit CAPA right here in Beaufort County.

​It's time to Get Chilly! The 4th annual Chilly Bean Run and Chili Cookoff is just around the corner! Always held on the Saturday before Super Bowl Sunday, this year's race will be on February 4, 2017 at 10:30am at the beautiful Coosaw Point neighborhood on Lady's Island in Beaufort. 
Runners can choose between 2 USATF certified distances: 5k or 10k and will be chip timed by Palmetto Running Company. Walkers, runners, families, kids and dogs are all encouraged to participate. Known for its afterparty, the Chilly Bean Run & Chili Cookoff will once again feature a DJ Donna warmup and runner send-off, live music by The Bull Grapes, and all you can eat chili cooked by amateurs and pro chefs from local restaurants. Craft beer, kids plates, and other concessions available for sale make sure there is plenty to eat and drink for all. All participants get a free ticket to the chili cookoff after party, and runners over age 21 receive a free recovery beer after the race!
Last year's race sold out at over 500 runners, and based on current registrations, organizers expect another sellout. To ensure you don't miss out, it is recommended that you preregister for the race at Race day registration is available, but has sold out for the past two years. Register early and arrive early! And bring your 4-legged running partner! The race is (leashed) dog-friendly. (dogs run for free). 
Not a runner? No problem- you can enter your best chili recipe in the amateur division of the chili cookoff after party. Not a cook? No problem- come eat! You can purchase tickets to the after party on site. A chili cookoff ticket is $10, and a bottomless beer cup is $15 for one, $20 for two. 
The race offers fun award categories, such as Furthest Distance traveled to run, Oldest Participant, Youngest Participant, First Military Finisher, First Dog to cross the finish line, and First Stroller. Kid-Friendly awards include the breakdown of smaller age award categories for male and female: 8 and under, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15-16, 17-18. The other awards are standard: top finisher male/female in 10-year age groups. 
This year's race benefits CAPA, the Child Abuse and Prevention Association in Beaufort. Proceeds from the race will be used to purchase computer equipment as well as other needed school supplies for the study rooms at the CAPA Open Arms Children's home. CAPA’s mission is to: break the destructive cycle of child abuse and neglect by equipping parents, children, and their caregivers with necessary skills, knowledge and values. Sign-up for Couch to 5K with Beaufort Running Tours
First off, you may be asking, "exactly how many miles is a 5K?" A 5K is 3.1 miles. Katie Howell from Beaufort Running Tours is here to help you achieve your goal of running a 5K. Too many people have been turned off of running simply by trying to start off too fast. Their bodies rebel, and they wind up miserable, wondering why anyone would possibly want to run in the first place.

You should ease into your 5K training plan gradually. In fact, the beginners' program is less of a running regimen than a walking and jogging program. The idea is to transform you from couch potato to runner, getting you to begin running a 5K or 3.1 miles and on a regular basis in just one month. This program runs on Saturday mornings, starting January 7th at 8:30am and runs until race day. That's 4 weeks to get you well on your way!

The program costs $50 and includes Chilly Bean race registration, race t-shirt, and a tour with Beaufort Running Tours. We will meet Saturday mornings at 8:30am at the Beaufort Downtown Waterfront Park except for the day we do the tour which will be at 9:30am.

On February 6, 2016, record 500-plus runners came out to challenge themselves on a 3.1 or 6.2 mile course through beautiful Coosaw Point neighborhood. The Chilly Bean run, held every year on Super Bowl Weekend features a snooze-button friendly mid-morning race, followed by a fantastic Chili Cook-off, complete with live music and every type of chili imaginable.


Local college prep school, Beaufort Academy Parents’ Association organizes the event, and has watched it grow by hundreds of participants each year. The parents association and Beaufort Academy is committed to community wellness, and enjoys providing a positive, inspiring event for runners and their families to come take part in the run, volunteer, or enjoy the chili cook-off. 


This year, race director Shannon Roberts and event organizer Vivi Verity wanted to find a charity to donate a portion of the race proceeds that reflected the positive and inspiring vibe of the Chilly Bean Run. They chose Operation Backpack, an offshoot of the United Way that provides backpacks, school supplies, and lunches to local schoolchildren. This year, Beaufort Academy was able to donate $1,000.00 to Operation Backpack. The Beaufort Academy parents’ association also volunteers at Operation Backpack work parties, as well as donates supplies as they are needed.  Pictured from left to right; Alison Barton, Katie Phifer, Vivi Verity & Shannon Roberts. Alison Barton and Katie Phifer, both volunteers at the United Way of the Lowcountry were very excited to receive this donation. Katie Phifer is the chair of Women’s Leadership Council for the United Way and Alison Barton is the Chair of Operation Backpack for 2016, which is an initiative of the Women’s Leadership Council (WLC) of the United Way of the Lowcountry.


Beaufort Academy is proud to provide a fun community wellness event, as well as to donate a portion of the proceeds to a local charity that benefits children in Beaufort County.
