Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader is a computerized reading incentive program, used by the students in grades one through six, to encourage and recognize beginning, struggling, and avid readers.  The program can also be used as a tool to guide students in leveled reading, helping teachers to gage a student’s reading level.  We currently own more than 2400 quizzes and the number keeps growing to meet the requests of the students.

Accelerated Reader is an enrichment tool, one of many our teachers use to encourage reading – not the only tool.  While we encourage the use of Accelerated Reader, there are no policies that stipulate that each teacher use it in the same way.  Some students love to take the quizzes and accumulate points.  Some students find that reading itself is the reward.  And some students find that quizzes take away the fun of reading.  Teachers encourage students to make use of the program and we have minimum participation guidelines (we like to see each students earn the five points necessary for a Reading Achiever dog tag in grades one through four) but going beyond that is up to the teacher’s discretion.  Accelerated Reader is not intended to be a competitive endeavor, but rather a tool to gage one’s own progress.

Accelerated Reader is located on all computers on the network so that students may take quizzes in their classrooms, in the computer lab, or in the library.  Students may take quizzes at any time but must always take them independently and without the book in hand.  To do so otherwise will be considered cheating and handled accordingly.

If you have questions regarding the use of Accelerated Reader or if you would like to request or donate quizzes, please feel free to contact the librarian, Gina Reilly, in the library.
